06/09/2007 - Kansas City, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Philadelphia Phillies placed right- hander Freddy Garcia on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right shoulder strain, and signed veteran reliever and former closer Jose Mesa to a major league contract.
Mesa will join the team this weekend in Kansas City as a front-end piece to the bullpen.
The right-hander, who signed with Detroit as a free agent in December, went 1-1 with a lofty 12.34 ERA in 16 appearances for the club this season before his release last Sunday.
Mesa, 41, first joined the Phillies on November 17, 2000 as a free agent, signing a two-year contract taking him through the 2002 season. In his first year with the team he finished with 42 saves, then topped that the following season by notching 45. The mark surpassed the Phillies' record of 43, set by Mitch Williams in 1993.
Mesa has 20 years of major-league service with eight different teams. Since moving permanently into a relief role in 1994, the Dominican Republic native has never pitched in fewer than 51 games.
A 6-foot-3 right-hander, Mesa joins the Phillies with 320 saves in 982 career games.
Garcia, meanwhile, was expected to land on the DL after lasting only 1 2/3 innings in Friday's 8-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals. After yielding six runs on seven hits, with a pair of walks and one strikeout, Garcia told Phillies manager Charlie Manuel that his shoulder had been bothering him the past couple weeks, but he failed to notify Manuel or anyone on the team's medical staff.
The injury is another blow to a Phillies' bullpen already missing Tom Gordon (rotator cuff) and Brett Myers (shoulder).
Garcia will be examined by team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti on Monday, while Manuel said he would wait until then to announce who would take Garcia's next start, on Wednesday against the White Sox.
