Dice-K makes season debut in Baltimore

05/01/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his season debut this evening when the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles continue their three-game series at Fenway Park.

Following an injury-plagued and inconsistent 2009 season, Matsuzaka started the year on the disabled list because of a neck strain. The right-hander, who made just 12 starts last season after winning 18 games in 2008, went 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three rehab starts for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Matsuzaka is 3-1 in his career against Baltimore with a 4.78 ERA.

Opposing Matsuzaka will be Brad Bergesen, a righty who was recalled from Triple-A. The second-year hurler was 7-5 last season, but struggled out of the gates this year, going 0-2 with a 12.19 ERA in three outings, leading to a demotion to Norfolk, where the team hopes he was able to work things out.

Bergesen has never faced Boston.

Boston owns a sensational 25-5 record over its last 30 overall meetings with Baltimore, but one of the five defeats came by a 5-4 final on Friday.

Miguel Tejada singled in the winning run in the 10th inning, and Adam Jones went 3-for-5 with a double and scored the winning run for the Orioles. Tejada finished 3-for-4 with a solo homer and three RBI.

J.D. Drew hit a pair of solo homers, while Dustin Pedroia also went deep and knocked in two runs for the Red Sox, who had won their previous three games.

"What it comes down to is getting the big hit when you need it from a guy who's been there," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "That's why Tejada is who he is. He has the ability to rise to the occasion because he's been there so many times and shows tremendous poise."

Matt Albers (1-3) retired the side in order in the top of the 10th to get the win for Baltimore.

The Orioles still own the worst record in the majors by a comfortable margin at 5-18. As for Boston, which is a disappointing 11-12 overall, it sits in fourth place in the loaded AL East.

The Red Sox nearly produced a three-game sweep of the O's last weekend at Fenway Park, but Baltimore salvaged Sunday's finale by rallying for a 7-6 decision in 10 innings.
